I didn't read any of the thread referenced by jbb55, but in addition to the post above I would recommend sticking with non-proprietary systems (iPod or Zune).

Players like the Creative models are recognized as mass storage devices (essentially a USB hard drive) and as such enables you to copy files directly to the device.

This is a huge benefit for many reasons - the most obvious being no dependence on software to get files on the device, but also if your over a friend's place and want to get some music from them it isn't a hassle, just plug into USB and drag and drop.

For sync capabilities anything with Plays-For-Sure technology with be compatible with Windows Media Player and will detect as soon as you plug into USB.
